Many employers are just starting to look into the whole employee background check thing after being told about it at industry meetings and informational exchanges. Others are finding that they have to start implanting an employee background check policy because they have lost time, money, and perhaps even information, product, and people as a result of less than trustworthy people that were working for them. Unfortunately we live in a world where you cannot take everything at face value. Someone might seem like a trustworthy character, but when you take a look beneath the surface you may find some surprising things.
Learning More Through an Employee Background Check
When someone applies for a job you have their basic information, or at least the information that they have given you. Most of us assume that the information that is on a job application is legit, but you would be surprised to learn that there are a growing number of people who knowingly falsify the information on their job application. Wouldn’t you like to know this before you hire someone?
When you run an employee background check you can get a wide variety of information about the person. You can find out about past criminal and sexual offenses, bankruptcies, law suits, liens, collections, and more. This can give you a glimpse at the person behind the name and the good interview. It is often the people that give the best interviews and who seem the most qualified that come back with something that you would have never expected on their background check.
That being said, just because someone has something pop up on their background check doesn’t mean that you can’t hire them. For instance, does the person have a lot of traffic tickets? If they will not be driving while on the job than you needn’t worry about this, if you don’t want to concern yourself with it, since it has nothing to do with the job. Did the person get charged with a misdemeanor 20 years ago? If so, you need to decide if this is something that you want to worry about or will keep you from hiring someone who is very well qualified and has not had any run ins with the law ever since. The background check is just a tool for you to use in deciding who is the right person for the job and who is not, you may be surprised to see how not very black and white it really is.
