Employee Background Screening: An Employer’s Way of Selecting the Right Employee


When a person applies for a job, he will undergo through several tests to prove himself qualified for the position he wants to be in. He answers written examinations, faces interviews, and demonstrates his key competencies relevant to the job. But while he goes and successfully passes these tests, there is still one more exam which he has to pass with flying colors: an employee background screening.

Employee background screening is a practice in which employers check if their applicant has the right qualifications in becoming part of their company. This doesn’t involve the applicant’s skills and competencies; it’s his behavior that’s to be evaluated.

Here are the common items in which the applicant is evaluated during an employment background screening:

Employment history. The applicant’s previous work experiences in other companies are reviewed by calling his past superiors. This is to ensure the employer that the applicant indicated the correct information on his CV, and as well see why and how he left those past companies. His performance as an employee is also checked in this area. This is the section where his trust is tried and tested.

There are many reasons why a current applicant left his previous job position. This could be due to personal concerns, which is normal, but there are times when the applicant left because he was terminated from the job. Was he in good terms with his supervisor and workmates? Did he perform well in the tasks given to him? The answers to these questions definitely have a lot to do in deciding whether or not he is qualified in the job he is applying for.

Driving records. When a person is applying for a delivery position or any job that has to do with driving, this is of course an obvious and expected check. Reviewing one’s driving records will show how competent he is in delivering goods or services on time, as well as his prudence in driving both personal and company vehicles.

However, if an applicant is vying for a position not related to delivery and driving, having his driving records checked is still a must in an employment background screening. Being a prudent driver shows that the applicant obeys the law-and that the same thing applies to company rules. If he has shown a list of traffic violations, there is a big chance that he would be committing violations to company rules as well.

Credit check. Finally, the applicant’s credit records are given a good look. As part of an employment background screening, checking one’s credit report is important to people who are applying for financial or fund management positions. The employer can then see how well the applicant manages his finances, for these will be the same skills he will be using at work.

Checking one’s credit report also shows his level of responsibility as a person particularly in dealing with his finances. As an employer, you will see what kind of lifestyle your applicant lives in; hence, you can gauge his personality both at work and in the outside world.
