Trying to balance a career and a family is one of the hardest things you will have to do in your life. It does not matter if you are happily married with a wonderful partner or a single parent. The balancing act that goes on between work and meetings and children and school and events is chaotic on its best day. If you are lucky enough to be able to afford a nanny, consider yourself blessed. A good nanny can be a life saver and a valuable addition to the family.
However, that being said, a bad nanny can, at best, make life even more difficult and you do not want to even consider how bad it could get. When you hire a nanny, you are welcoming someone into your home to live and be there more than you are yourself. More than that, you are entrusting your children to be cared for in the same manner that you, yourself would care for them. Making sure you do a careful and thorough background check of all potential nannies is one of the best decisions you will ever make.
In the initial interview process it is important to make sure that you get at least 3 professional references. Make sure you call each of these 3 and get details about the nanny. Ask them why she left, how long she was there, how did she perform, do they recommend you hire her? Let them talk and listen to any problems or concerns and weigh them carefully. Have the nanny fill out an application and have her list her place of birth, date of birth, her last five employers, the names and addresses of close relatives, colleges or schools she has attended and her last 3 addresses.
You can ask anything else you feel is important as well. Make sure she signs some type of release stating that she understands you are going to be completing a background check on her. If she refuses, this is probably not someone you want caring for your children and living in your home. Verify all information that she submits to you. There are also several background checking services that will check out any criminal background information for a nominal fee. When you are hiring someone to care for your children, no expense should be spared.
