How to Run a Background Check on a Physician

I think that most of us can agree that we have, at some point, had a bad experience with a doctor. If you have not personally experienced a negative experience with a physician, you almost certainly have known someone who has. The fact of the matter is, you can put 2 doctors side by side who went to the same medical school and had all the same training and one will be exponentially better than the other. Not all doctors are created equal.

In some cases, this is a subjective opinion. It could be that you and a particular doctor do not have cohesive personalities or have communication differences. The doctor patient relationship is just that, a relationship. There has to be trust and chemistry between the doctor and patient in order for the relationship to work. However, in some cases, there can be scary differences between the 2 doctors.

While all hospitals do extensive background checks on physicians before hiring them, what about the physicians who have their own practice? What about what the physician has been up to between the time of hire and the 20 years he has been in practice? There are some things that you can do to choose a good physician. First of all, word of mouth is a great way to find a good doctor.

Talk to your mom, your neighbors, your co-workers, and the guy you sit next to on the train. Find out if they know of any doctors who have good reputations in the area you need to have addressed. Research the internet for any news stories involving your prospective doctor. Were they positive or negative or non-existent?

Schedule a consultation with the physician. Just sit and talk with him or her. Find out how you feel and follow your gut instinct. Visit with several and find one that you feel the most comfortable with and who seems to know the most about your situation. There is also several online background checking services that are devoted strictly to physicians. Your health or the health of a loved one is a terrible thing to take a risk on. Finding out everything you can is definitely worth the time and effort.
